MP raises problems of funding for older people’s support in Westminster debate
Anne Main, MP for St Albans, raised important issues on funding which affect Abbeyfield in a Westminster Hall Debate at the House of Commons on 31 st October 2006.
In her opening speech, Anne Main congratulated Abbeyfield on its 50 th anniversary and its achievements over the years. These good wishes were endorsed by other MPs present, including Health Minister Ivan Lewis for the Government, Shadow Health Minister Stephen O’Brien and Liberal Democrat Health Spokesman Sandra Gidley. Ms Main then expressed serious concern about levels of funding provided in “Supporting People” contracts which are affecting the viability of supported sheltered housing, not only for Abbeyfield but also many other providers of services for older people. As well as bringing these important issues before Parliament, Anne Main and her fellow MPs also praised Abbeyfield’s work highly and congratulated the movement on its 50 th anniversary.
