Wish upon a star

Abbeyfield UK, the Registered Social Landlord set up by The Abbeyfield Society in October 2003 was recently inspected by the Audit Commission who describe Abbeyfield UK as a customer focused organisation which enables residents to live independent lives.

The services provided by Abbeyfield UK are ‘fair’ with promising prospects for improvement, according to the Audit Commission’s independent report released in October 2007.

Inspectors visited Abbeyfield during July 2007 to look at the service provided to residents.

In its report the commission gave particular praise to Abbeyfield’s work to involve residents, its employees’ commitment to the needs of residents, its repairs service and its approach to enabling residents to live independent lives.

Other areas which gained positive recognition included its fair charges and approach to tackling any anti-social behaviour.

Brian House, chief executive of Abbeyfield UK, said: “This result is a real team effort and I would like to thank our residents, sponsors, board members and staff for moving the organisation forward and helping us obtain this result. To achieve promising prospects for improvement only three years after we set up is very pleasing and evidence of the hard work put in to improve the service provided.

“We know there is work still to be done and we will be acting immediately upon the inspectors’ recommendations. We have inherited a diverse stock which brings many challenges, but these are being overcome.

“The inspectors’ comments that we have an effective service which often results in improving health for new residents is particularly heartening and reflects everything Abbeyfield is about.”

Abbeyfield UK currently provides housing, care and support for around 2,000 frail older people and is part of the Abbeyfield movement.
