Choosing a care home for a loved one can be an incredibly difficult and emotional decision. Residential care isn't something most of us think much about until we suddenly need it, and when that time comes, it can feel overwhelming, especially when time is short. You may be feeling anxious, worried, and unsure about how to make the best decision for your beloved family member. You probably have many important questions: Will they get the care they need? Are the staff qualified and compassionate? Is the care person-centred and tailored to individual needs? Will they feel comfortable and at home? Will they be safe? Will they be treated with respect and dignity? Will they have meaningful, fulfilling activities available?
Abbeyfield House is here to help put your mind at ease. Nestled in the picturesque market town of Clitheroe, Abbeyfield offers a peaceful setting surrounded by landscaped gardens yet remains close to local shops and other conveniences. Purpose-built in 1992 and refurbished in 2024, the home provides 40 ensuite rooms that your loved one can personalize with their own furniture and keepsakes, ensuring they feel comfortable and at home. With a warm and welcoming atmosphere, Abbeyfield offers both residential and dementia care, always prioritizing the dignity, independence, and well-being of each resident. We have several communal areas like lounges, large and small conservatories as well as a newly updated activities room where residents can relax or participate in social activities.
We aim to create a comfortable and stimulating atmosphere where residents’ quality of life is paramount and their individual needs are catered for with sensitivity and compassion, with members of staff always on hand to offer assistance and advice. The care provided is 24-hour, and care plans are developed in full consultation with residents and their families, ensuring the care is person-centred and sensitive to their unique needs. This includes help with things like mobility, dressing, and medication, while always respecting residents' dignity and independence. The staff are dedicated and compassionate, and the home’s manager, Andrea Smith, is supported by a dedicated and committed team of qualified staff whose main aim is to make Abbeyfield House a comfortable and caring home. Residents are very welcome to bring their own furniture, keepsakes and television to make their room their own. A full laundry service is also provided.
We are a dementia-friendly care home, where we prioritize the comfort and well-being of all our residents. Our inclusive environment is designed to ensure that everyone, regardless of physical ability, can move freely and interact with one another. We believe in fostering a sense of community and belonging, enabling residents to mix and socialize in a safe and supportive setting. Whether physically able or disabled, every individual here is treated with the utmost care and respect, making our home a truly harmonious and welcoming place for all. We also recognise the importance of regular entertainment and activities to make life as stimulating and varied as each individual wishes. We have four comfortable lounges, two with televisions, and if the weather is good there is a fully accessible garden area with raised flower beds and patio area.
Meals are provided by a full catering team and our chefs ensure that the menus are varied as well as nutritious. The chefs are always willing to cater to individual dietary requirements and your loved one can choose to dine in the main communal dining room, in their own room or in our newly refurbished activities lounge.
For an extra charge we can arrange personal services such as hairdressing, podiatry services and eye tests to be carried out in the comfort of Abbeyfield House. We also work closely with local churches, arranging church services and communion. Relatives and friends are always welcome to visit. At Abbeyfield House we are dedicated to providing a comfortable, stimulating, and caring environment for your loved one, making it a truly welcoming place for all residents.
Activities
We are lucky enough to have a brilliant activities team who are passionate about engaging with our residents and putting on a diverse range of activities and events. Activities include music and movement, armchair aerobics, singing, word games such as scrabble, weekly quizzes, ludo, knitting, sewing, building puzzles, pet therapy, baking, bingo, card making, domino’s, arts and crafts, film afternoons, trips out for lunch, a monthly library service, a weekly Abbeyfield Shop that comes to you, communion, planting flowers and vegetables, taking residents out to the shops, musical entertainment, an annual summer garden party as well as a Christmas Panto. The Activities Schedule is updated every Friday and activities vary weekly to allow for the change in season, mood and resident-led interests.
We have several groups that visit us such as Bambino’s Boutique Daycare and Brookside Nursery School who visit fortnightly on alternate Monday mornings as well as a Stay & Play Intergenerational Toddler group every Friday morning run by Hyndburn and Ribble Valley Family Hub. We also have a weekly Coffee Morning every Tuesday that is open to the public. Clitheroe Library visits monthly to refresh their member’s books.
Abbeyfield House recently opened its doors to the local community, offering a welcoming space for various voluntary groups to use the newly refurbished activities lounge. By doing so, these local groups can continue running their activities without the burden of overhead costs for renting a space. This partnership not only strengthens ties between the us and the community but also brings vibrant, meaningful engagement to both residents and visitors. We are proud to support these groups, creating a shared space that benefits everyone involved, while fostering a sense of belonging and connection.
