There is a small car park available at the home.
Built in 1924, James House is a residential care home set in the lovely Northwood community on the outskirts of a nature reserve with excellent underground links into the centre of London. Our home is small with twelve rooms, five of which are en-suite, creating a family, home from home feel and is still full of its beautiful original characteristics and features.
James House was formerly home to a dental surgery and his surgery during the 1920’s up until the early 1960’s; when it then became a care home and was acquired by The Abbeyfield Society.
Our house had an extension which was built from donations and the generosity from a local family trust. The foundation stone was laid on October 2nd 1971 by Lady Radley, the widow of Sir Gordon Radley, who had been a member of the Regional Committee and was, in some ways, a pioneer of Extra Care.
Situated in Northwood, our home is an excellent location with good transport links. We’re a five minute walk from the underground station, have good bus links, and we’re also a five minute walk away from the town, where you’ll find an array of family run businesses, as well as a selection of restaurants and cafes, local pub, supermarket, hairdressers, banks, local library, and five local churches within walking distance.
If you’re looking to find companionship and socialise and meet new friends, our lounge provides the perfect place to catch up with fellow residents or your family and friends, whilst it also offers ample space if you want somewhere to sit quietly.
We’re not like typical care homes, as our house was not purpose built, but a family home that has been converted. This helps to create our homely feel along with our friendly, dedicated and professional team who are committed to creating a warm, safe and secure environment, where we respect your rights of choice, dignity and respect at a high level at all times.
Sylvia has been at James House for 30 years working in a variety of roles. Currently working as the weekend cook, she provides delicious homemade meals for the residents, as well as donating beautifully decorated cakes. Sylvia also volunteers her time to accompany residents on outings and for appointments. She has a passion for her job, and loves spending time with the residents, and her enthusiasm and kindness is clear for all to see.
Residents enjoy their time with her – especially exercises and quizzes. Dilini accompanies them on organised outings, which include lunches out (residents’ favourite), walks around the Lido and the Aquadrome, visits to various museums, and day tips to zoos and the beach.
Sarah previously trained and worked as social worker before joining James House, and has worked here for 2 years. Sarah has a passion for learning and development and always aims to improve her knowledge in order to give the best possible care.

Life here is very good. We are listened to, and that is very important, in my opinion. We are all very happy and satisfied with what we are provided with.
