The Government has today published the report of the Older People’s Housing Taskforce: Our future homes: housing that promotes wellbeing and community for an ageing population.

Chaired by Professor Julienne Meyer CBE, the Taskforce undertook an assessment of the market for specialised and supported older people’s housing, and explored options for the provision of greater choice and quality of housing to better meet older people’s needs.

Paul Tennant, CEO of Abbeyfield Living Society, said: “The challenges around the realities of an ageing population and the resulting impact on housing, health and social care have not been addressed by successive governments for decades, and there is an urgent need to improve options in later life.

“The Government, along with its delivery agencies, must take decisive action now to implement the recommendations of the report so that older people in our society have access to greater choice, better quality housing and improved outcomes.

“The Abbeyfield-sponsored All-Party Parliamentary Group inquiry into the regeneration of existing outdated sheltered housing stock must also be considered in parallel, with equal emphasis towards directing funding to reserve this precious commodity; something I am glad to see is highlighted in the Taskforce report”.
