Location

Nestled in the picturesque town of Crowborough bordering Ashdown Forest, an area of natural beauty and the home of Winnie the Pooh, Darwin House offers sheltered housing, also known as supported housing, in a warm and welcoming home for older people who want to enjoy retirement.

Situated at the base of Crowborough Hill, Darwin House provides residents with a peaceful and scenic setting. Crowborough is situated in the High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB), surrounded by picturesque landscapes, rolling hills and plenty of lush greenery.

Crowborough has good transport links, including a mainline railway station that connects to London and other nearby towns. Additionally, there are regular bus services, making it convenient for residents to travel within the town and neighbouring areas. The main line station, taxi service and bus stop are all within walking distance of Darwin House.

Darwin House is located close to Crowborough town centre, where residents can take advantage of an array of amenities, including a range of restaurants, civic centre for community events, a library, and a variety of shops.

Close to Darwin House you’ll find a medical centre which includes a pharmacy and dentist. There is  a mini-market nearby, as well as the local park which is perfect for a stroll in the fresh air.

Our house

Converted in 1966, Darwin House was originally two Edwardian semi detached properties, subsequently joined and converted into suitable accommodation for older people to live independently with support. We have eight en-suite rooms and a one-bedroom flat with kitchenette and large sitting room, suitable for two people.  All rooms and flat have been refurbished with low level access showers. Each room has Wi-Fi access enabling you to browse online or chat with friends and family.

Darwin House is a friendly, homely retirement home, run by a team of staff and volunteers who are very experienced, kind, and thoughtful, and we are very proud to have achieved the Abbeyfield Core Standard award of excellence.

We extend a warm welcome to resident’s families and guests, offering them the opportunity to enjoy an overnight stay with their loved ones.

Communal spaces

Darwin House boasts a very attractive garden with a conservatory, porch, patio and seating area, providing a delightful setting for relaxation and enjoyment. If you have a car, you can bring this with you as we have a car park. Darwin House also has a library for the literary enthusiasts among our residents.

Our food

We take pride in offering our residents nutritious, home cooked meals seven days a week. We also provide ingredients for breakfast, allowing residents to start the day at their own pace.

Activities and events

At Darwin House, we offer a range of activities and events to enhance the quality of life for our residents. Our activities calendar includes enjoyable bingo evenings, pottery making classes, and light exercise sessions during the winter months. Our dedicated volunteers also organise outings to the local pubs for lunches and we love to celebrate residents’ birthdays, and make Christmas a truly memorable time for all.

Respite care

We understand that sometimes extra care and support are needed, which is why we have a dedicated respite room, and welcome the option for residents to bring their own care packages to ensure that individual needs are met.

Darwin House is managed by the Abbeyfield Crowborough Society.
